Wireless in the Dorms
Students can set up their own wireless equipment in the dorms, with the following restrictions:
- If any student's wireless equipment causes problems (e.g. a wireless router distributing IP addresses) it may be blocked. This can happen if you hook it up backwards.
- The router should be configured to have the same MAC, Machine Address Code, as the computer it will connect to so the network thinks it's your computer and allows it on.
- The wireless network should also be secured with an encryption scheme so that others don't use your connection or change your settings. In a dorm setting, many students would gladly jump on an unsecured wireless network, causing vulnerability in the system and slow down the internet access of the router due to increased traffic.

Generic Guideline for Connecting your Wireless Router to Harding's Network
Connect Directly to the Router with a network cable
Open your Browser
Connect to the Router Gateway. This is sometimes written on the barcode underneath the router, or in the instruction guide.
username and password should also be written on the same sticker as the gateway.
Wireless SettingsWireless Network Mode: Select 'Mixed' WPA2 Personal
SSID: Give the WAP a name
Channel: If there is a high level of routers around it may be more efficient if you change the channel
SSID Broadcast: ENABLE
Wireless Security
Select WPA2 Personal
Select TKIP+AES
Type any 'shared key' password with 8-63 chars
Click 'Save Settings'
TIP:
Before Bridging the Router do IP config, Store the IP Address, Subnet and Gateway in a safe place so that you can reconnect to the router when you need to login to reconfigure it. Without router DHCP you have to manually set your TCP/IP Setting's to the router. If you do not know these, you can always reset the router and start from scratch.
Bridge the Router
To use the router on Harding's network you must use Bridged Mode.
Look for, and Disable DHCP
Plug the wall port into one of the LAN (PC) ports on the router instead of the WAN port
Administration
Change the Local Router Access Password
The router is now set up and secure.
